Geoff Bodine Daytona Crash 2000

July 9th, 2007 | Rod | Crash Single Videos

Here’s one of the really bad NASCAR crashes of this century. Geoff Bodine’s truck is completely demolished against the wall and retaining fence in the 2000 Daytona Craftsman series race.

Watch it.

It’s hard to believe that he would survive something like this. But that’s been said before with a lot of other crashes.

You’ve got quite a compliation here of really nasty but non-fatal crashes. Good job.

Marking you down for a nomination for the Bloggers Choice Awards. www.bloggerschoiceawards.com.

While this video clip is spectaular it does not compare to experiencing it in person.

This is the first time I have seen the crash since being there in person. We were seated at the end of pit road about 30 rows from the catch fence. I remeber the flash of the explosion near the Start / Finish line; just past our seats the roll cage being knocked into the air and the only thing left on the truck was the fuel cell and engine block. I remember the explosion as the fuel cell erupted after being hit by another truck while in mid-air and the engine block being ejected well into the In Field grass…..

The thing I remember most is the complete silence, some crying in the stands, and the erie calm as Geoff lay exposed in what was left of the roll cage. There was no doubt in our minds we had witnessed a terminal crash.

The track was shut down for a couple hours after the crash and I remember the announcement that was made that Geoff was still alive but in critcal condition. The place erupted….

From that day forward when I watch a NASCAR race I have a clearly defined respect for those drivers whoose love of racing provides the courage to climb into that seat…I know I couldn’t do it.

    Chuck,

Thank you for sharing your experience.

In a sense, being a NASCAR driver is like being an astronaut. There are inherent dangers involved and the participants always take carefully calculated risks.

To be fair to astronauts, at least the emergency services can quickly get to a NASCAR driver in trouble.
